Nestled along the banks of the Columbia River, Vancouver has the distinction of being the fourth largest city in Washington State and home to nearly 162,000 residents. Sometimes called Vancouver USA to avoid confusion with the larger Canadian city of the same name, this affluent, southwest Washington city is home base for a variety of technology businesses as well as the headquarters of Nautilus corporation, and branch offices of Hewlitt Packard.

Vancouver Washington real estate is a mixture of 19th and early 20th century Victorian homes, new condominiums, traditional single family homes and downtown, mixed use, waterfront development.

Shopping and Dining

The Pacific Northwest region is known for its plethora of restaurants, many of which make use of locally-raised fish, meat and produce. Vancouver Washington is no exception. The city boasts a variety of eateries, from the elegant and historic Grant House on Officer's Row to the fun and casual Salmon Creek Brew Pub in downtown Vancouver. Be sure to check out the innovative Thai Orchard, as well as the Jerusalem Cafe for authentic Mediterranean cuisines!

Shopping in Vancouver also reflects the city's adventuresome spirit. All of the expected national retailers can be found at the Westfield Vancouver Mall just off of I-205. But, the area is also home to a collection of mixed use shopping, entertainment and dining facilities, such as Uptown Village, with its antique stores, coffee shops and eclectic mix of shops, and Heart of Vancouver, a downtown shopping and dining center with a 12-screen movie complex and ethnic eateries.

Parks and Recreation

One advantage to Vancouver Washington real estate is the town's abundant parks and recreation areas. The five-acre Esther Short Park in downtown Vancouver provides an oasis for weary workers and shoppers with its walking paths, public art and bandstand for summer concerts. The park system manages nearly 7000 acres of parkland in and around Vancouver, with facilities ranging from playgrounds to tennis and racquetball courts to community centers.

Living

Vancouver is desirable for its mixture of housing options. Vancouver Washington real estate is nothing if not varied. Buyers can choose from restored Victorian mansions on the city's east side, the more than 3000 residences that are part of the city's waterfront development initiative, or single family ranch homes, historic bungalows or new construction in one of Washington's many friendly neighborhoods.

Schools, Health, Transportation

Vancouver’s school children are served by one of two school districts: Vancouver Public Schools, which covers most of the western part of the city and the Evergreen School District, which covers the eastern part of Vancouver. Vancouver School District manages six high schools, six middle schools and 21 elementary schools. Evergreen schools include six high schools, six middle schools and 20 elementary schools. Vancouver is also home to a branch of Washington State University and Clark University, a two-year community college.

PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center is the largest health care facility in Vancouver, treating more than 300,000 patients annually at its six locations. In addition, there is a VA hospital in town and , as well as Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital.

Getting from one place to another in Vancouver is relatively easy. In addition to the two Interstate highways that bisect the city (I-5 and I-205), the Clark County Public Transportation Authority (dubbed C-Tran) operates 135 buses, with routes that include express service to downtown Vancouver from several points around town. The nearest commercial airport is Portland International Airport in Portland, Oregon, about 12 miles from downtown Vancouver.
